Kalispell, Montana- The much-dreaded fire season has begun to ramp up to a new level in Northwest Montana as Flathead Valley continues to be enveloped in a smoky haze; a condition that is expected to worsen as the summer drags on.

According to the official fire map of Montana, there has been a total of 727 fires so far this year, with 34 starting this week, and 5 starting in the last 24 hours. Currently, there are 16 active fires but with temperatures in Northwest Montana soaring well into the 90s over the next 10 days an increase in smoke, and the potential for fire, will be greatly increased.

So as the summer fire season continues to heat up, stay alert and in tune with your surroundings. Also, if you live in a high-risk fire zone make sure to clear a wide area around your home of flammable material, brush, or other debris that would put your home in peril. In addition, make sure to have a well-planned emergency evacuation plan in place.
