Video: Richland County Commissioner Spells Out Real Reason Sydney Sugar Beet Plant to Close

The sugar beet plant in Sydney, Montana has been in operation for nearly a century and employs around 300 people in the sparsely populated region of Eastern Montana.

Recently, the parent company of Sydney Sugar, American Crystal, decided to close its plant in Sydney and move the entire operation to its Red River Valley location.

The sting of not only the loss of jobs but the enormous reduction in the tax base will be felt for many years to come in Richland County, whose entire population is just over 11,000.

Duane Mitchell has boots on the ground in Richland County as he has served as a County Commissioner since 2013, was born in Sydney, and moved back there permanently in 1977.
