Sometimes you really do wonder if some politicians are lying or just plain ignorant. The latest example of this wonder if Florida Representative Alan Grayson, who thinks the AR-15 is a real fully automatic “assault rifle.” In an interview following the shooting in Orlando by a follower of Islam’s Muhammad, Grayson made the ridiculous claim that an AR-15 can fire 700 rounds per minute.
In speaking of Islamic jihadist Omar Mateen, Grayson said, “If he were who he was and he was not able to buy a weapon that shoots off 700 rounds in a minute, a lot of those people would still be alive.”
“If somebody like him had nothing worse to deal with other than a Glock pistol, which was his other weapon today, he might have killed three or four people and not fifty,” Grayson added.
“It’s way too easy to kill people in America today, and we have to think long and hard about what to do about that,” he concluded.
Stop and think about that ridiculous claims this man is making. First, there is no way, an AR-15, even fully automatic is going to be firing off 700 rounds per minute. Consider this video where a fully automatic AK-47 is tested for a meltdown using 75 round drums and 30 round Magpul PMAGS.
In order for an AR-15 to even fire fully automatic, one would have to make significant changes and considering the fact that you probably would not be able to fire but just over half of 700 rounds through the thing before it needs a cleaning would also demonstrate a weakness in the weapon.
Stop and think about Grayson’s comments concerning a Glock pistol. Glock makes 100 round magazines for their pistols. What is this Islamist had several of those, could Rep. Grayson sit there with a straight face and push the nonsense he pushed regarding the Glock as well? I’m pretty sure he could.
However, the point is that the way to stop violent criminals like Mateen is for citizens to take matters in their own hands, arm themselves and train for when those types of situations arise. Then, and only then, will they be empowered to stop such violence.
Liberty and freedom are born out of the individual, not government restrictions on the freedoms of the people.
